Ten Web 2.0 eLearning Things You Can Do in Ten Minutes

The first I-net technology — the Internet — has been swept along by dynamic user-generated content into Web 2.0. Even if you are all over social networking, photo and video sharing, content tagging, to uncover new things in technological socialization.

  1. Listen to a conference presentation. When you run across conference presentations while reading your RSS feeds (EDUCAUSE Connect is a prime source, as is OLDaily), save the conference site as a bookmark and revisit it to hear a presentation. [NOTE: check out Robin Good's feed.]
  2. Record a 10-minute presentation about something you are working on or learning about, either as audio (use Odeo) or video (use Ustream), and post it on your blog.
  3. Do a search on the title of your most recent post or on the title of the most recent thing you’ve read or thought about. Don’t just use Google search, use Google Blog Search and Google Image Search, Amazon, del.icio.us, Technorati, Slideshare, or Youtube. Scan the results and if you find something interesting, save it in del.icio.us to read later.
  4. Write a blog post or article describing something you’ve learned recently. It can be something you’ve read or culled from a meeting, conference notes (which you just capture on the fly using a text editor), or a link you’ve posted to del.icio.us. The trick here is to keep your writing activity to less than 10 minutes—make a point quickly and then click “submit.”
  5. Tidy your e-portfolio. For example, upload your slides to Slideshare and audio recordings to Odeo and embed the code in your presentation page. Or write a description and link to your latest publication. Or update your project list.
  6. Create a slide on Zoho. Just do one slide at a time; find an image using the Creative Commons licensed content on Flickr and a short bit of text from a source or yourself. Add this to your stick of prepared slides you use for your next talk.
  7. Find a blogger you currently read in your RSS reader and go to their website. Follow all the links to other blogs in their blogroll or feedroll, or which are referenced in their posts. Well, maybe not all the links, or it will take hours, not ten minutes.
  8. Write a comment on a blog post, article, or book written by an e-learning researcher or practitioner.
  9. Go to a website like Engadget, Metafilter, Digg, Mixx, Mashable, or Hotlinks and skip through the items. These sites produce much too much content to follow diligently, but are great for browsing and serendipitous discovery. If you find something interesting, write a short blog post about it or at least a comment.
  10. Catch up on one of your online games with a colleague—Scrabulous on Facebook or Backgammon on Yahoo. Or make a Lolcat. Or watch a Youtube video.

Esquire’s 10 Favorite Sandwiches – One by Chef Kevin Davis

Those of us at the front counter at The Steelhead Diner several days ago, ordered rich boy sandwiches for lunch. The regulars and first-timers all ordered the same thing — the rich boy — a flavorsome advancement on the po’boy, and word is getting around.

Esquire for March 2008 illustrates Chef Kevin Davis’ rich boy sandwich by ingredient and method, plus his hot sauce aioli.

“Traditional po’boy bread has a light, crispy crust and an airy center,” he reveals. “Also, when you order a po’boy in Louisiana, you’ll be asked what you want on it, and the common answer is ‘dressed’ – with mayo, pickle, tomatoes, and lettuce. I spice up the mayonnaise with another Louisiana specialty, Crystal hot sauce. It’s relatively mild and lets you add enough to get that vinegar zip without making it too hot.”

Oh, my goodness. That’s so good! When the cruise season starts, we might have to get their early.

Schiller’s ‘Ode to Joy’ in its original, 1785 version

There is the story of the individual who has struggled to an insight, light shines upon the dark, and there is joy. The experience of joy is more than enough.

After watching the conductors Herbert von Karajan in part one and part two, and, Leonard Bernstein Finale perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Final Chorus on Schiller’s Ode of Joy, I read the original words by Fredrick Schiller.

Many thanks to my excellent German teacher, Axel Behn, who found his way from East Germany to graduate student housing at the University of Oregon, where I passed Scientific German as my other language exam.

Great American Songbook Lyrics

This our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. The Way You Look Tonight – song and dance:

“Some day, when I’m awfully low
When the world is cold
I will feel a glow just thinking of you
And the way you look tonight

Yes, you’re lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft
There is nothing for me but to love you
And the way you look tonight

With each word your tenderness grows
Tearing my fear apart
And that laugh..wrinkles your nose
Touches my foolish heart

Lovely … Never, never change
Keep that breathless charm
Won’t you please arrange it ? ’cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight

And that laugh that wrinkles your nose
It touches my foolish heart

Lovely … Don’t you ever change
Keep that breathless charm
Won’t you please arrange it ? ’cause I love you
a-just the way you look tonight

Mm, Mm Mm, Mm,
Just the way you look tonight

Bathing in Béla Bartók, Concerto for Orchestra

As a kid, I dove into the RCA “Living Stereo” (1955) recording of Fritz Reiner conducting the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and decades later I’m still down with the Concerto for Orchestra by Béla Bartók.

You can check out the video of the Concerto for Orchestra by the Berliner Philharmoniker, Pierre Boulez conductor, “Discovering Masterpieces of Classical Music: Béla Bartók” (2003), available from NetFlix among other sources.

Barack Obama, Seattle, February 8, 2008

You just want to dance and shout with the Fired Up, Ready to Go music video that launched the appearance of Senator Obama today.

This challenging musical project, conceived and delivered in a very short time, reminded me what can be accomplished when totally engaged. For more about the recording and reaction, check out Bergevin Brothers Music.

On YouTube is the clip of Barack Obama telling the story about Edith Childs, councilwoman from Greenwood, SC, who gave him the chant “Fired up, ready to go!”

At the Key Arena, I heard the senator ask us to “see ourselves in others,” as reiterated from Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hooray for The Steelhead Diner, 1st Anniversary …

… from a regular steelheader.

On February 1, 2007, The Steelhead Diner opened for business. Looking back onver year #1, I can tell you  this wonderful food is indescribably good to eat. Jumbo lump Dungeness crab cake, Brutus (not Caesar) salad, Rich-boy (not po’ boy) sandwich, public market fish and pastas and vegies, cavier pie, and gumbos all cooked with love.

The local radio and press in Seattle, plus the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Sunset Magazine, Gourmet, Esquire and Cooking Light have given high marks to The Steelhead Diner. I eat lunch there every day – really every day.

All the best to you and yours this holiday season!

First, make merry with this White Christmas video from a trusted friend, who got it from a friend in Europe.

We look back at 2007 – a big year of social networking (Web 2.0). Marj and I stayed close to home, and at the ready to slide into a stool at the Steelhead Diner in the Public Market.

We followed some dear friends around Latin America by flying on Google Earth from Santiago (Chile) to Mendoza and Vista Flores (Argentina) and back to their home to San Carlos (Mexico).

Last week, our daughter, and son-in-law touched down in Ho Chi Minh City, from where they video conferenced with us. They visited several of the temples at Angkor Wat, Cambodia, with colleagues. On Christmas Day, they called us from the top of their uptown hotel in Saigon, which we saw on Google Earth. Santa is as much a craze as Levi jeans and Michael Jackson for kids and disco clubs. Joel’s Kids First Vietnam wheelchair factory is located in Quang Tri, north of Hue, near those beautiful beaches.

As FREE radio from the Music Genome Project, you can launch Pandora to get a radio station to play your favorite artist, song or composer. You can share if you’d like. I have created seven radio stations (composers from Dominico Scarlatti to Maurice Ravel; jazzers Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson and so forth), and produced a QuickMix for a broad range of selections from classical, world and jazz stations.

I am maintaining my entry to Wikipedia, the encyclopedia for everyone on the planet. I created an entry on Gregory Short, who taught me even more about music, musicians and piano. The Kirkpatricks1 wrote about my learning measurement program on how training the right topics for our constituencies at Regence, whose mission is to end the tyranny of health cost and confusion.

If you are interested in more about podcasting and Wikipedia, check out TEDTalks video presentations of annual sessions on breakthrough concepts and practices that are held in Monterey, CA, near my home town of Carmel on the beach. Once you have downloaded iTunes > iTunes Store > Podcasts, search for TEDtalks. If you subscribe, find Jimmy Wales (2005), who is founder of Wikipedia – in the self-organizing, self-correcting, ever-expanding, and thoroughly addictive encyclopedia of the future. In this presentation, he explains how Wikipedia’s collaborative systems work, and why they succeed. While we’re here in iTunes, check out Herbie Hancock Playlist on the Celebrity Playlists covering composer Igor Stravinsky to jazz artist, session leader + composer Miles Davis.

Be sure to check out Marj’s new book, The Manx Cat: A Short Tale. Just go to Blub > Bookstore. In the Search box, enter Manx. To find out more about the contents, double-click the cover. Awesome!

Patty’s garden

By Debra Smith, Herald Writer

Everyone in the small community of Edmonds town homes owned the weedy little rectangle at the end of the building, but no one wanted anything to do with it.

No one except Patty Steele-Smith.

She saw the potential for something peaceful and profound in a neglected, less-than-nothing spot.

She envisioned a garden; not just a retreat, but a piece of living art. She didn’t know much about plants, but creating was familiar ground.

At Cornish, she studied how to create installations, three-dimensional spaces meant to involve all the viewer’s senses.

She learned about plants along the way, and in a few short years, her work of art was winning awards and on garden tours.

You can see it and five other gardens on the Edmonds Rhythm and Blooms Garden Tour, set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday.

The garden is small, just a slice of land next to her townhouse. Its design is based on the ancient principles of feng shui, and the garden is as much about the physical features as it is about plants.

“Plants, water, rock – all of these have life,” she said. “They draw you in and make you feel a part of nature.”

Steele-Smith, 44, works as a personal trainer and coach. She shows her artwork at an Edmonds gallery.

The garden includes eye-catching pieces, such as an assortment of containers, and her artwork, including a path of 202 handmade mosaic stepping stones. A Plexiglas spiral hangs above a circle of multi-colored glass pieces.

And then there are the cats. Her kitties love to loll in the garden, and she created two special cat paths with cat mosaic stepping stones just for them.

The garden’s most eye-catching feature is a ceramic black panther bursting through a mirror, its claws streaming water. Steele-Smith made it, saying the panther is a defender against bad spirits.

“When you have a talent, it’s a gift,” she said. “This has allowed me to share my talent with the community.”
